Moon Phases

Here's a sneak preview of what we will do in science this week!  In addition to talking about the Sun and planets, we will talk about moon phases and the relationship between the rotation of the moon around the Earth and how that relates to a day.  To help students understand this, they will be working with partners to create a yummy visual!

Second Graders are Shining Stars!!

Next week we will begin our space unit! It will be a basic introduction to space--planets, sun, moon, etc.  This video shows the foundation for our space studies next week...check it out!  As always, I value your feedback, so if you have any questions, comments, ideas, or if you would like to volunteer one day (especially Thursday since that's the day we have science!), I would love your help with the fun activities your students will be participating in!

Field Trip-September 26th

All three second grade classes will be going on a field trip on Friday, September 26th.  We will be going to the Children's Museum of Indianapolis from 8:30 to 2:30.  Please make sure your child is here promptly at 8 on the morning of the 26th, as we will be boarding the buses at 8:15 after attendance and announcements, and heading out by 8:30.  A limited number of chaperones may come with us, so if you are interested, be sure to indicate it on the permission slip your child will be bringing home in his or her folder.  The cost for each child is $8, so make sure you send this money in with the permission slip as well.  A packed lunch in a paper or plastic sack is also required, as we will eat our lunches in a facility provided by the museum.  (Please make sure your child's lunch and lunch bag is disposable, so we can throw everything away by the end of lunch.)  The main exhibits students are required to see are the ScienceWorks exhibit and The Power of Children.  In the ScienceWorks exhibit, students can explore "Nature's Backyard" and hands-on activities that will finish up our unit on camping and the outdoors.  The Power of Children is an exhibit we want our students to see to supplement our study of character education.  Students may see any other exhibits of interest during the time we are there, as long as they visit the two required exhibits.

Going on a Camping Trip!

Our camping theme is based off of our reading this week, "Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night" by Cynthia Rylant.  It is about a boy, Henry, and his dog, Mudge, who go on a camping trip with Henry's parents.  Each week, our story has new vocabulary words, which our series calls "Amazing Words."  Below is a list of these words, so you can help your child study for the test on Friday.  Students will be bringing a set of flash cards home in their folders on Monday with a list of a few review games to help study.

Directions and Maps

As part of the second grade standards and curriculum, students will learn and practice map skills this week in Social Studies, specifically using a compass and moving within a grid.  For our first lesson, I will make a huge grid and compass rose on the floor using masking tape.

We will talk about directions and related directions and maps to hiking on a trail.  Once we have talked about directions, students will learn how to move within the grid.  For example, a student may be asked to move 3 units south, and 2 units east.  The class will learn what this looks like by being actively involved in a hands-on approach to learning.  Later in the week, we will put these skills to use by going outside and completing a scavenger hunt (weather permitting).

Is it an Insect?

Your child will be learning about what makes an insect an insect this week in science.  Students will participate in sorting activity where they will classify plastic bugs into the categories "Insect" or "Not and Insect."  As one of our learning stations this week, students will also get a chance to make their own, labeling the parts that make it an insect.
